Catholic Solidarity

I met a CIL member at a networking event today. This was our conversation. This is not an exaggeration.

Mr. Alumni Stadium: So where did you go to school?

St. Claire: Georgetown.

Mr. Alumni Stadium: Oh, I'm not sure if we can keep talking.

St. Claire: Why's that? (smiling)

Mr. Alumni Stadium: Well I really wanted to go to Georgetown. Like really, really wanted to go. I got wait listed, even. I went to Boston College.

St. Claire: Oh...I love Boston! (awkward pause)

Please see my first posts to explain why this exchange was inherently uncomfortable.

The moral of the story is, meeting a fellow CIL member doesn't have to be awkward. Just remember, we have Catholic solidarity!!
Until next time, St. Claire

Facebook

Facebook in the CIL...where to begin. Its the place where you keep tabs on your friends, acquaintances, your 7th grade crush, the guy down the hall that you're not sure knows you exist, your buddy from calculus, and of course- those few annoying, un-fun girls from high school that you need to check every tagged photo to remind yourself of how hot, desirable, and more fun you are!

Facebook is where you find out what your Friday and Saturday night plans are. Facebook is where you see how great you looked in that dress on Saturday or how bad of an idea those extra two shots at 2 a.m. were. You can relive the glory of the weekend every Sunday morning before you head to the caf for brunch...Facebook photos give everyone something to talk about!

You also get to see the parties you didn't make it to...and see what your other friends were up to that you didn't get to hang with.

Privacy? Not in the 21st century. Happy facebooking!
I'm looking at your page right now, love, St. Claire

No More Neglect!

After an extended hiatus, the Catholic Ivy League is back!

Let me explain...after a few tumultuous weeks, I've decided to return to the blog and recommit myself to regular posts and entertaining readers!

The CIL has become more selective than ever, let me break it down for you.

The following are the percentage of applicants accepted at each respective CIL school for the Class of 2015:

Boston College: 27.9% (Huffington Post)
Notre Dame: 24.2% (Huffington Post)
Georgetown: 18% (Huffington Post)

Holy Cross 33.3% (InLikeMe)
Fordham 40.1% (InLikeMe)
Villanova 42.6% (InLikeMe)

There you have it, this admissions season is not without its fair share of triumphs and disappointments. St. Catherine will be attending a CIL school this fall, and we could not be more thrilled!

Stay tuned for more CIL updates...
until then, yours, St. Claire

You Know You're a Good Fit for the CIL if....

St. Catherine has been having the time of her life on Spring Break, and it got me thinking, what are some signs for the high schoolers out there to indicate a CIL school would be a good fit? If this was you in high school, or is you currently, please refer to my earlier posts to pick the best CIL school for you:

- You went to the Atlantis for spring break your senior year. If not, you went to Disney World. Either way, you traveled somewhere warm and fun.

-You had two weeks for Spring Break in March, not one. If not, you had some form of an Easter break.

-One of your parents or uncles or aunts attended a CIL school. Probably, more than one family member went to the same CIL school.

-You own a Vineyard Vines bag with custom trim for your high school. (The CIL has their own custom versions for each school, you can upgrade, don't worry!)

-There's just something about neon colored sneakers, t-shirts, shorts, whatever! NEON!

-One of your parents, or both, went to Catholic high schools.

-You live north of the Mason-Dixon line.

-You know you DON'T want to attend college south of the Mason-Dixon line. Except for Georgetown, that's okay.

More to come..this list is by no means exhaustive! Stay tuned!

Wishing I was on Spring Break, St. Claire

Waiting on Pins and Needles

My poor baby sister (St. Catherine) is anxiously awaiting her admission letters. When will they come? It amazes me that Georgetown still sends admission letters by mail, while every other school pretty much has some type of electronic system figured out. It should all be known by April 1st!

What will she choose? A CIL school...or one of those OTHER Ivy League places?

Stay tuned to find out...

Pray for St. Catherine!

Waiting by the mail shoot, St. Claire

So Much For the Sweet Sixteen

Hello to my fellow Catholic Ivy Leaguers, I'm sure you are all as disappointed as St. Claire that our one remaining team suffered a pitiful loss yesterday and failed to advance in the NCAA tournament. Not to dwell on the past...

I discovered a CD in my car today that was from circa 2007, naturally I played it immediately, and let me tell you, St. Claire wasn't listening to church music back then! Tenacious D is the standout track from the album.

An amazing song, like a good friend, is something you may not always have on your mind, or listen to every day, but when you reconnect, its like no time has passed. Every lyric is instantly recalled and all of a sudden you're belting out "I'm not going to cook it but I'll order it from Zanabar!" at the top of your lungs.

What songs really get you going?

Sweet dreams, St. Claire

Dancing in the Streets

O.M.G.

Catholic Ivy League did NOT show up for game time this week. Not. At. All.

Well maybe Notre Dame did, thank GOD!

My bracket is a hot mess. I don't even want to TALK about Georgetown's performance last night. Villanova losing to George Mason is at least a bit more understandable as they were picks #9 and #8, respectively, in the East bracket.

I am officially shifting all of my support to the Irish! What else can a fan do?

Stay tuned, faithful fans! Meanwhile...enjoy your Saturday night! I know I will ;) Yours, St. Claire

The Bracket According to St. Claire

If you're like me, you love March Madness. So much basketball, so many upsets, the glory of sports, ESPN on all the time....what's not to love? I can't say I spend my time studying the teams, however, or really caring about any schools other than the members of the Catholic Ivy League. Let's look at which schools made it to the Big Dance:

(unfortunately this is a short list)

#2 seed Notre Dame is playing in the Southwest section

#6 seed Georgetown is in the Southeast

#9 seed Villanova is in the East

For me, filling out a bracket is easy. I simply pick a school to win based off of how many people I know that have attended the school (and if I think of them as friends). If I don't know anyone who attended either school I'll base my preference off geographic desirability- for example with Kansas v. Illinois, Illinois was the clear choice because hello! Chicago!

Sadly this Catholic Ivy Leaguer found herself in a pickle...Notre Dame v. Georgetown in my Sweet Sixteen!! I had to go with Notre Dame ultimately (and yes, that does violate my aforementioned rules) but Georgetown's pathetic showing at the Big East tournament swung my vote. We'll see how it all plays out!

Yours in Catholic solidarity, St. Claire

The Big Dance

March Madness has arrived! Its been a truly mad march...if you didn't catch my drift from my last post. More to follow on basketball tomorrow...but today I've got to share the playlist I've been blasting non-stop since yesterday. The more music I listen to, the quieter my thoughts become. Try it! On the train, walking, on the subway, at work, in the car, working out, E-V-E-R-Y-W-H-E-R-E my iPod and I travel together. Here's my March Madness soundtrack:

Rolling in the Deep- Adele
She's Gone- Hall & Oates
Baby I'm Yours (feat. Irfane) - BreakBot
Pretty Girl Rock- Keri Hilson
Make You Mine- BreakBot
I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time- Mariah Carey
The One That Got Away- Katy Perry
The Show Goes On- Lupe Fiasco
A Whole New World- Brad Kane & Lea Salonga
Get Ready- The Temptations
Goodbye Stranger- Supertramp

Today's most relevant lyric to the madness:

"If I never look behind me, my troubles will be few..." - Supertramp

Can't stop the beat!

Be sure to be on the lookout for irrelevant March Madness posts this week...because what's a good Catholic Ivy Leaguer without their bracket!

Yours in the madness, St. Claire

Rolling in the Deep

St. Claire will be shifting her focus a bit for the next few posts...without getting in too deep, my life's taken a different direction. Its hard to describe how it feels to completely fall off the rails. Luckily, one of the best coping mechanisms I've discovered is blasting out my eardrums. My iPod has saved me these past couple days, specifically Rolling in the Deep. I had honestly forgotten all about Adele but caught her on Chelsea Lately the other night, and immediately knew she was going to be on repeat indefinitely. My main focus right now is to "turn my sorrow into treasured gold."

I am in no position to give anyone advice, but here's some things I wish I had done earlier...

1. Be honest. Be honest with everyone you meet, everyone you speak to, but most importantly, be honest with yourself. The corny saying is completely true...the truth will set you free.

2. Even when you feel like your life is over, hold on. Reach out to your friends, you'll never know the value of a friend until you let them in. Open your heart, and you'll never regret it. True friends know how you're feeling regardless of what you're actually saying.

3. It's ok to feel fragile, hurt, sad, lonely. Its not ok to lose hope. Never lose hope. Because when you lose hope, you've lost it all.

I promise I'll be back to my usual snarky self soon, but until then, please bear with me. Be sure to keep up with Big East Basketball this week, I know I'll be keeping track!

And happy Mardi Gras! Be on the lookout for a Lent related post soon.

Down but not out, St. Claire

I'm Back!

Sorry for my lack of posts, but I'm back!

St. Claire has had a rough go of it lately. Despite being equipped with a Catholic Ivy League degree, there's still plenty of stuff I need to learn.

Things I've learned (or re-learned) over the past week:
-True friends, the ones that will stand by you no matter what, the ones that will always make you laugh, the ones that will triumph with you when you're winning and cry with you when you're down, those are the kind of friends to never give up. Always keep them in your life no matter what. Everyone deserves a second chance at some point, give it to them. But that's it. Hang on to your true friends, they are the greatest gifts you will ever receive.

-Day drinking is a marathon, not a sprint. Pace yourself to be in it for the long haul. Try to avoid an afternoon nap if you can, Starbucks can do the trick for a second wind just as well. More time to enjoy a Super Saturday!

-You can come home again.

What are the life lessons you've learned lately?

Love, St. Claire

Against All Odds

So I've had Phil Collins stick in my head all day, so what? Judge me.

His famous ballad Against All Odds (Take a Look at Me Now) got me thinking about the CIL, naturally. I know some all you out there think its "against all odds" that you'll be admitted to a CIL school, or even that it would be against all odds that you would enjoy attending such a school.

What are you willing to do to distinguish yourself? What's going to make someone "take a look at me now"?

As my dad always told me, "SOMEONE has to go to these schools. Why not you?"

Don't sell yourself short, ever.

Believing in you, St. Claire

United We Stand

I spent the afternoon yesterday at a fab winter wedding. The priest, during his homily, touched on what makes Catholics different from other Christians- unity in the Eucharist. For those of you who are unfamiliar with the faith, while all Christians believe Jesus is their savior- only Catholics believe they receive his body and blood (NOT a symbol, his ACTUAL body and blood) through the holy eucharist at weekly mass. That got me to thinking- what makes the Catholic Ivy League schools different from other schools? All colleges are founded to educate their students, but what makes a Catholic school different from a public, private, or another Christian institution? Here's what I've come up with:

1. Jesuits educate their students to be "men and women for others". Social awareness is a cornerstone of a Catholic education- for what's the point of a fancy education if you're not going to make the world a better place?

2. Catholic schools require students to take a form of theology in the core curriculum. Contrary to popular belief, these classes are focused on Bible scripture and basic fundamentals of theology as a concept- these courses are NOT designed to make you "turn Catholic" nor are they a sophisticated form of Sunday School.

3. Catholic schools always have TWO spring breaks- one for a week in March, and a smaller one for Easter (Holy Thursday, Good Friday and Easter Monday are typically days given off).

What else makes a Catholic school different from another college? Is it more of a personal thing or can it be explained by pointing to specific rules and traditions of each institution? Why enroll in the Catholic Ivy League- what makes it worth it?

Yours truly, St. Claire

Single or Attached on Valentine's Day?

Dear Catholic Ivy Leaguers- today is the feast day of one of my fellow saints - St. Valentine. Rather than bore you on history- you get enough of that in school! - let me tell you how to deal with Valentine's Day, single or attached:

Single:

Ladies, you can say you are happy to be single all you want today, and you've got every right to live it up! Make a pitcher of sangria with your girlfriends, go out for sushi and sake, wear your pinkest J. Crew sweater and tightest skinny jeans to class and then dress it UP tonight! Have fun, celebrate your single life, and forget all about what's-his-name you were hooking up with last semester. Ancient history!

As hot as you are going to look in your pink stilettos (yes, I know its a Monday night, but you're only in college once! GO OUT!) you might feel a slight twinge in your heart when you see that perfect cute couple walking hand in hand in front of you heading for a romantic price-fixed dinner with complimentary soundtracks and single red roses. Resist the urge to throw a tree branch in their direction and ALSO resist the urge to dial your ex to "catch up!" You are hot, accomplished, and a Catholic Ivy League student- don't forget it! Your Valentine is out there- he just probably went to the wrong school! (More on meeting Catholic Ivy Leaguers post-grad in a later post). Keep the faith, and in the meantime, LOVE your life!

Attached:

Well aren't you lucky! You and your man are of course planning a flashy evening with a dozen roses, Godiva chocolate, a $75 price-fixed menu dinner you made reservations for a month in advance (read: this does not apply to Notre Dame or Holy Cross- I honestly don't know where couples EAT in those towns!). Obviously you have roommates, one of whom is at least single, so be sensitive. Don't ask her to take pictures of you and your man before your leave. Don't leave your flowers on your desk- put them in a common area (if you live in a house) so everyone can enjoy them. Do offer her some of your chocolate, and do offer to do a girls weekend next weekend (Helllllllo! Long weekend! You CAN take a night off from your man!) and remember, your man must really like you to take you out on a such a public day of love- so be sure to show your appreciation!

Happy Valentine's, Catholic Ivy Leaguers - kisses from St. Claire

Clothing Makes the [Wo]man

Some more items to add to your shopping list as a member of the Catholic Ivy League:

Females

Cable Knit Sweaters - if you're in the CIL, chances are, winter is cold. Stay warm with a classic cable knit, preferably in cashmere, the brighter the better. You've got plenty of time to wear the color black when you're a working professional with your CIL diploma. Enjoy color now!

Designer jeans- preferably Seven's, J Brand, Mavi, just something that costs more than $75 a pair (you can cheat and get them on sale, that's ok, no one has to know ;)

Something silver from Tiffany's- pretty much everyone will have some type of a heart, star, key, or T charm on a silver chain from Tiffany's. Don't worry about what kind of charm you have, just acquire one through any means necessary.

I apologize for the brevity, more to come tomorrow! - St. Claire

Clothing the Catholic Ivy Leaguer

Once you've paid the $900 or so deposit to reserve your spot at your Catholic Ivy League school, you'll want to stock up on the following (gender specific, of course):

Females
2 Longchamp purses (one small, one large) [do not bring your backpack from high school and expect to look cool walking around campus. you are in college. in the real world, people don't use backpacks, so get started early]

Small clutch (to fit only a phone, ID [yours or someone else's ;)], and credit card/cash) preferably from Coach or Vera Bradley

Rainboots [None of the geographies home to the CIL schools are particularly rainy, but everyone seems to have them]

Males
Sperry Boat Shoes (if you didn't already have them from prep school, now is the time to purchase them)

Black North Face fleece (try finding it at the end of the night at a house party- might be a better idea to get a grey or brown one for backup when you lose the first one)

Jeans (prep schoolers, I know you didn't wear them in high school, but this is college. Everyone wears jeans. Get your mom to buy them for you if you must)

more clothing to come tomorrow...until then, yours truly, St. Claire

US News and World Report

One of the cornerstones of an education in the Catholic Ivy League is that all claims must be backed up by proof- so to validate my prior post, refer to the US News & World Report college rankings 2011.

To summarize, Notre Dame is a respectable #19, closely followed by Georgetown at #21, and #31 Boston College. Fordham is represented at #56 on the National University Rankings.

Find Villanova ranked #1 on the Regional Universities (North) and Holy Cross holding #32 on the National Liberal Arts Rankings.

So, when someone says, "I'm going to Notre Dame" that means "Yes, I was accepted to all the other CIL schools, but I love football, my first trip to Indiana was to an ND football game when I was 7 with my uncle's cousin's nephew, but who cares, I'm ready to party."

"I'm going to Georgetown" means "I may or may not have wanted to go to Notre Dame, but I'm more 'refined' and I want to be in a city. I'm also ready to party, and Boston's too cold."

"I'm going to Boston College" means "Ugh, I really tried for ND and G'town, but it didn't work out. I guess Boston's cool, I'm REALLY ready to party, where's the keg already?"

"I'm going to Fordham" means "I may have applied to the Big Three, maybe not. I went to Catholic high school and this seemed like a good choice. And New York? Can't beat it!" note: this person did not see Fordham Road on his or her campus tour

"I'm going to Holy Cross" means "I worked really hard in high school, but Georgetown, ND and BC only took three kids from my high school class. Oh well, Worcester is kinda near Boston, right? Where's the keg?"

"I'm going to Villanova" means "Yep, had my heart set on Georgetown."

Until next time, raise your glass and say a prayer to St. Claire

Welcome to the Catholic Ivy League- the Big Three and Little Three

Welcome to the Catholic Ivy League (CIL). I'll be your official guide to what it means to be a member of the CIL, what all members have in common, and most importantly, why being a member of the CIL makes you superior.

First- to be a member of the CIL, you must attend or have graduated from the following schools:

Notre Dame
Georgetown
Boston College
Fordham
Villanova
Holy Cross

Now, within these schools, there is an obvious hierarchy. Notre Dame has long been called the "holy grail" of Catholic education, and for good reason. Its the most Catholic of them all, from its stunning depiction of "touchdown Jesus" to segregating students according to gender specific dorms. It usually is the highest ranked on U.S. News and World Report among the CIL schools. Students who attend Notre Dame are looking for a specific type of college experience- a campus-focused life (because really, there's no shopping in South Bend, Indiana) centered around the one thing that brings over 80,000 people to the middle of nowhere 6 times a year- Notre Dame football. If there's one thing everyone has in common at ND, its the Fighting Irish. If you're looking for a rah, rah, tailgating mecca on alternating Saturday's in the fall, Notre Dame is the place for you.

Georgetown, next on the list, offers an entirely different college experience than ND, but some would say its much more "real world". Located in Washington, D.C., Georgetown is home to a diverse student population (read: international students, Asians, and the basketball team) and a plethora of first class amenities including Washington's famed shopping hub, M Street, as well as high class restaurants including Morton's, 1789, and Cafe Milano (where all the diplomats and even the president has been rumored to dine). If you want a college experience centered around internships, spending way more money than you have on off-campus housing and cab fares from Union Station or DCA, and some good old fashioned intellectual stimulation, this is your school. Sometimes the basketball team plays well, and everyone celebrates. But don't count on it, if you want sports, you're better off at ND.

Boston College, located outside of the historic city in Chestnut Hill, Mass., offers a winning combination of rah-rah athletics and campus life close to the energy and excitement of a major city. What Eagles lack in intellectual refinement they make up for in charm, class, and general peppiness. The football team isn't quite as good as ND's, but it still makes for an excellent Saturday afternoon at Alumni Stadium. You know you're in the CIL when you see alumni tailgating with Grey Goose in their $10,000 parking spaces. The diversity of academic programs is appealing, but there's a reason its ranked third on this list.

After the Big Three, the Little Three comprised of Fordham, Villanova, and Holy Cross follow, in no particular pecking order. If you want to be in New York and not become a drug addict at NYU or join the actual Ivy League at Columbia, Fordham's your best bet. Its a solid choice with a top ranked law school. Villanova, or Villa-no-fun, is located in the outskirts of the greater Philadelphia area. Avoid at all costs, you are much better off anywhere else than here. Holy Cross, located in Worcester, Mass., is your best choice of the three for a top-knotch education. You will work harder here than anywhere else in the CIL, so choose your major wisely. You don't want all those hours logged in the library to turn into a $30,000 job offer you had to use your parent's connections to score because you decided to study English or Philosophy.

So there you have it, the Big Three and the Little Three of the CIL. More schools to come, so stay tuned.
